The influence of the adopted United States dollar in Zimbabwe seems to be inspiring things on the sporting fields following the arrival of a British coach to lead one of the top soccer clubs in that country.

Harare based giants Caps United have appointed British Mark Harrison as their head coach for the next three years.

He takes over from Taurai Mangwiro and comes in exactly three years after the club parted ways with another European coach Sean Connor who had a disastrous stay at the former Cup Kings.

According to the Makepekepe spokesperson, Joyce Kapota, the former Chippa United of South Africa coach will be assisted by legendary goalkeeper Brenna Msiska and former player Fungai “Tostao” Kwashi.

“We’ve finalised the appointment of our coaching department with Briton Harrison now our head coach and he’ll be assisted by Msiska and Kwashi. They all have three-year contracts,” said Kapota.

Harrison holds an Uefa A licence badge and previously coached Oxford United, Stafford Rangers and Everton in the United Kingdom as well as Mpumalanga Black Aces and African Warriors before his spell with Chippa United in South Africa.

A former goalkeeper, Harrison becomes the highest qualified Premiership coach followed by Highlanders’ Bongani Mafu and Kelvin Kaindu if the Zambian mentor joins Triangle.

Harrison began his career in the game in 1977 playing for Southampton in England as a trainee. After three years he moved to Port Vale where he immediately became the first choice goalkeeper for the “Valiants”.

He had a brief loan period at Stoke City and thereafter returned to Vale Park where he enjoyed a 46-game stint for the team before being sold to Stoke City where he stayed for a brief period.

He then moved to South Africa and played for Hellenic.

On his retirement, Harrison went into football coaching.

The Briton has coached six teams inside four years in South Africa and it still remains to be seen whether he will see his contract through in Harare.
