High jumpers to take centre stage at Thursday’s opening session

Twelve men and thirteen women will launch the 17th IAAF World Indoor Championships in Birmingham this Thursday evening, 1 March, when the two high jump finals take centre stage alongside the women’s 3000m final at the opening session.

The unusual start to the championships will feature a new format for international level competition with the women’s and men’s high jump finals being held simultaneously for the first time.

ICC cricket World Cup qualifiers: All you need to know

Even before the 2015 Cricket World Cup had started, the International Cricket Council (ICC) had announced that the number of participating teams would be reduced to 10, four less than the 2015 tournament, for the 2019 edition.

The new World Cup qualification structure stated that the host nation and the top seven other nations in the ICC ODI Championship on September 30, 2017 would directly qualify for the tournament. The teams that have already booked a berth in the 2019 edition are India, Australia, England, Bangladesh, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and South Africa. The last two spots would be decided by the World Cup qualifiers, which will commence on March 4.

Agnes Abu smashes 14 year old record

Middle distance specialist Agnes Abu has obliterated the 14-year-old 800m indoor national record by more than 2 seconds clocking 2 minutes 2.30 seconds.

Abu, a student of the Middle Tennessee State University in the USA, bested Akosua Serwaa’s 2 minutes 4.61 seconds national record set on 29th February 2004 in Leipzig, Germany with her personal best performance to write a new chapter into her own career and Ghana’s history.
