Fifa, world soccer’s governing body, has scrapped plans to vote on a revamp of its Club World Cup competition at a council meeting in Rwanda.
The Fifa Council was set to decide on proposals to overhaul the competition, with an expanded tournament to replace the quadrennial Confederations Cup national team tournament, which is traditionally held in the summer preceding World Cups.
However, it was decided that Fifa will instead prolong the consultation process into the possible revamp, with many members from European governing body Uefa opposing the changes. Some Uefa representatives had threatened to stage a walkout over the proposals.
Instead, a taskforce has been set up to explore the possibility of the competition’s overhaul, and is set to report on its findings at the next Fifa Council meeting in March 2019.

CLUBS CALL FOR END TO ALCOHOL BAN

English soccer clubs are in favour of a law change that would allow fans to consume alcohol in their seats.
Since 1985, legislation has existed which prevents spectators from drinking alcoholic beverages in view of the playing area, forcing fans to remain within the concourse of the venue.
Clubs challenging the current law, which is unique to stadia featuring soccer matches, have argued that an end to the 1985 Sporting Events (Control of Alcohol) Act would reduce the issue of matchday binge drinking, as well as providing an increase in revenue for clubs.
The report states that English Football League (EFL) outfits Sunderland, Ipswich Town, Doncaster Rovers, Accrington Stanley, Port Vale, Forest Green Rovers, Lincoln City, Tranmere Rovers and Northampton Town have all backed a pilot scheme. Meanwhile, Grimsby Town, Newport County and Gillingham are also said to have suggested that they would be open to discussing the situation.
The Football Supporters Federation (FSF) is also supporting calls for a reconsideration of the 33-year-old regulations. Amanda Jacks, caseworker for the FSF, told Talksport: “When the laws were drafted they were a knee-jerk reaction to problems at the time.

Alessando DiCato was appointed by the International Sport Climbing Federation (IFSC) as its Competition Manager for The World Games 2021 in Birmingham, Alabama, 15-25 July 2021. In an interview he describes the lessons he learned at the first Competition Manager Meeting in the host city in October.

How did you experience the Competition Manager Meeting?

Alessandro DiCato: It was my first Competition Managers Meeting, so I don’t have any benchmarks. After the two days here in Birmingham I can say that the meeting offered great opportunities for me in more than one aspect. Firstly, it created the feeling of being together as a team. The federations work together with the Birmingham organisers and the IWGA. We are really striving to achieve a common goal, the success of The World Games in 2021.

What were the other aspects?

One year after his compatriot Joyciline Jepkosgei broke the women’s world record at the Medio Maratón de Valencia Trinidad Alfonso, Kenya’s Abraham Kiptum broke the men’s world record* at the IAAF Gold Label road race, clocking 58:18 to take five seconds off the mark set by Eritrea's Zersenay Tadese in 2010.
At yesterday’s technical meeting it was confirmed that the men’s pacemakers would reach the 10km point in 27:50 to target a finishing time just inside 59 minutes, but there wasn’t any talk of a possible world record assault.
On a perfect day for endurance events (a slight wind and 11C), the race opened according to the plan with the main pack passing the opening five kilometres in 13:56. By 10 kilometres, the pace had dropped slightly as the 15-man lead pack went through that checkpoint in 28:02.
But shortly afterwards the long-legged Kiptum broke away from the rest of the pack with incredible ease and began to cover each kilometre in a stunning 2:44.

Chris Broad today became only the second member of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees to reach 300 ODIs when he walked out for the toss in the third ODI between India and the Windies in Pune.

Even though Broad made his ODI debut as an official in Auckland in 2004, 11 years after Ranjan Madugalle refereed in his opening match in Karachi, the Englishman now trails the Sri Lankan by only 36 ODIs. Jeff Crowe of New Zealand is third on the list with 270 ODIs, while former India fast bowler Javagal Srinath has officiated in 212 ODIs. Roshan Mahanama retired in 2015 after refereeing in 222 ODIs.

Broad is presently sitting on 98 Tests and will become the second referee after Madugalle to complete a unique double by reaching the 100-Test mark in the second Test between New Zealand and Bangladesh in Wellington in March 2019. Madugalle also leads Broad 92-89 on a head-to-head in T20Is.

A stylish left-handed top-order batsman during his playing days, Broad became an elite match referee in 2004, a year after refereeing in his maiden Test in Hamilton, and has since refereed in all the ICC Cricket World Cups.

Kenya’s Abraham Kiptum broke the men’s world record* at the Medio Maratón de Valencia Trinidad Alfonso on Sunday (28), clocking 58:18 at the IAAF Gold Label road race to take five seconds off the mark set by Eritrea's Zersenay Tadese in 2010.
On a perfect day for distance running, the 15-man lead pack went through the first 10 kilometres in 28:02. Shortly afterwards the long-legged Kiptum broke away from the rest of the pack and his 15-kilometre split of 41:40 – just seven seconds slower than Tadese’s equivalent split from his world record run – suggested that Kiptum was on course to break his PB of 59:09 set six weeks ago in Copenhagen.
Having covered the second 10-kilometre section in 27:16, Kiptum strode home in 58:18 to break the world record by five seconds.
“I can’t believe it, I’m over the moon,” said 29-year-old Kiptum. “Obviously I knew I was in good shape because I set a PB last month in Copenhagen but I was eager to run in Valencia because it’s one of the flattest circuits I’ve ever run and I was confident of improving on my best.

Runner-up last year, this time the number one: the Ethiopian Kelkile Gezahegn won the 37th edition of the Mainova Frankfurt Marathon in cool and at times extremely windy conditions in 2:06:37. After a thrilling duel he broke away from Martin Kosgey of Kenya who finished in 2:06:41. Fellow Kenyan Alex Kibet finished third on his marathon debut in 2:07:09.

A World Record for Masters or Veteran Runners was broken when Mark Kiptoo finished sixth in 2:07:50, improving the men’s Over-40 record by 48 seconds. Arne Gabius showed strong form to finish ninth in a high-quality field when the 37-year-old crossed the line in 2:11:45, the fastest time by a German this year.

The top result of the day was achieved by the women’s winner as the 33-year-old Ethiopian Meskerem Assefa broke the course record with 2:20:36. That was 25 seconds faster than her compatriot Meselech Melkamu had run here in 2012.

In a women’s field which produced high-quality performances in depth, Haftamnesh Tesfay of Ethiopia ran 2:20:47 for second place, also faster than Melkamu’s former course record of 2:21:01. Ethiopia achieved a clean sweep of the women’s podium when Bedatu Hirpa crossed the line for third in the Festhalle in 2:21:32. The leading German finisher among the women was Katharina Heinig who finished impressively in 14th place, just inside 2:30. Her time of 2:29:55 was the second fastest by a German woman this year.

13,934 runners from 102 countries took part in this year’s Mainova Frankfurt Marathon and, taking into account participants in the various parallel events, 26,826 were running in total. The Mainova Frankfurt Marathon is an IAAF Gold Label race, the highest category in international road running.

NEW YORK (Sunday, Oct. 28, 2018) – The New York Red Bulls leapt past Atlanta United on MLS Decision Day presented by AT&T to capture their third Supporters’ Shield following a 1-0 victory against Orlando City SC on Sunday at Red Bull Arena. Led by Homegrown Player Derrick Etienne Jr.’s strong cutback effort to put NYRB up 1-0 early in the second half (SEE GOAL ), the Red Bulls became only the second club in MLS history to come from behind on the season’s final game to win the Shield (the other was the 2001 Miami Fusion over the Chicago Fire). The Red Bulls also won the Supporters’ Shield in 2013 and 2015.

The Red Bulls cap the regular season with a 22-7-5 record (71 points), which breaks the MLS points record set by Toronto FC in 2017 (20-5-9, 69 points) and matched by Atlanta in 2018 (21-7-6, 69 points). Amakhosi were humbled by the Buccaneers in their last Absa Premiership clash back in March and are now facing the daunting prospect of playing against their rivals having not won in any of the Absa Premiership Soweto Derby fixtures, for the last four years.
For fans attending the match, there is always a great deal of pride as the two giants face off at the FNB stadium. With tickets selling out a week before the game, the clash has been billed as the biggest game of the season so far, owing to the rivalry between the two sets of fans and the two teams having continuously dished out entertaining, winning football since the start of the 2018/19 Absa Premiership season.
Absa will be using the Soweto Derby to continue to encourage fans to celebrate the wins, the spectacular goals and energy in the various stadiums across the country through ’Bring Your Voice’, which will be an opportunity for fans to express their Africanacity.
