FIFA and the Local Organising Committee (LOC) are delighted to unveil the Official Emblem of the FIFA U-17 World Cup Brazil 2019. The emblem launch further whets appetites ahead of the draw, which will take place at the Home of FIFA in Zurich tomorrow, 11 July at 15:00 CET and will be live‑streamed on FIFA’s YouTube channel.
The emblem takes its inspiration from the country’s rich history and diverse landscapes, with a variety of distinctive elements coming together to form the shape of the tournament trophy. The base evokes the lush green of Brazil’s natural scenery. Sweeping vegetation leads the viewer’s eye past the intense reds of the Brazilian soil and yellowy orange of the country’s world‑famous gemstones towards a celebratory figure. That figure, in turn, reaches towards a ball, the design of which is inspired by the iconic curved columns of Brasília cathedral, a masterpiece by renowned Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer.

A top-class duel is in prospect in the BMW BERLIN-MARATHON when Germany’s biggest marathon and an IAAF Gold Label race takes place on September 29 with the news that Gladys Cherono, both title and course record holder, will face her fellow Kenyan Vivian Cheruiyot. The duo are among an elite group of world-class women runners who have improved their personal bests to sub-2:19 in the past year in winning high quality races in the Abbott World Marathon Majors (AWMM) series. But they will both have to beware of a dangerous Ethiopian, Mare Dibaba, who has twice run under 2:20 and took the bronze medal in the 2016 Olympic Marathon in Rio.
“We are naturally delighted that we’ll be having the defending champion Gladys Cherono on the start line,” said Race Director Mark Milde and added: “Compared to the men, the women in Berlin have some ground to make up. With three very strong contenders in the line-up, the women’s race on September 29 could be centre stage.” In the past twelve years the men’s race at the BMW BERLIN-MARATHON has produced a string of world class times with six world records into the bargain. The presence of Gladys Cherono and Vivian Cheruiyot suggests that these two Kenyans could headline a show-stealing performance from the elite women in general.
The media landscape has changed dramatically over the last decade. As a result, newsrooms have been forced to make monumental changes such as reducing the staff complement to keep up with the demands, or they have simply had to shut down.
With some African newsrooms being written out of history, there has been an emergence of international media setting up shop on the continent. This interest serves as a double-edged sword for African media that often finds itself under-resourced. Nicolas Pompigne-Mognard, the founder and chairman of the APO Group, is of the view that the African media landscape has faced challenges that precede digital migration, which has compounded existing problems. An incident that stands out for him, before the digitizing of media, was a lack of access to information for African reporters, and that propelled him to start one of the foremost media relations firms on the continent. When he was a journalist for online publication, Gabonews, and the deputy president of the Pan-African Press Organisation in France, between 2005 and 2007, Pompigne-Mognard says this was a recurring problem hampering the productivity of African reporters. “If you wanted the right to attend an international press conference, you would need an official card.
In addition, TV figures have seen India alone amass a viewership of 342m during the first fortnight of the tournament even before the much anticipated fixture between India and Pakistan. Hotstar, ICC’s official digital licensee in India, delivered a record 15.6 million peak concurrent live viewers for the India v Pakistan match - a record for an international cricket fixture across formats. The nail-biting India v Afghanistan fixture on Saturday at Southampton also delivered similar peak number of concurrent live viewers for the platform.
Leapfrogging Africa’s innovation agenda with local cloud solutions
Kampala, Tuesday 25 June 2019. Pan-African connectivity provider, BringCom, in partnership with science and technology investor, Imprimatur Capital, and European edge cloud software company, GIG Technology, have together birthed what is to provide the African technology industry with cloud sovereignty – afriQloud. Today launched in Uganda, afriQloud will provide, at internationally competitive rates, local and foreign customers with an innovative and secure distributed edge cloud service. Hans van Linschoten, founding partner of Imprimatur Capital Africa and CEO of afriQloud “We see significant potential in the growing African cloud market where an estimated $2 billion is being spent in cloud this year, and we’re excited to bring this service to the continent. By the end of 2019 we will complement the few developed markets clouds with a powerful and local distributed cloud in at least 15 countries. This ensures data sovereignty for institutions and governments within Africa’s shores.” Most of Africa’s content on the internet is currently hosted on servers outside the continent. Implementation of edge cloud computing services in Africa has been adversely affected by lack of reliable and secure connectivity from various service providers. The cost of setting up ICT infrastructure with improved data latency and minimized downtime has also contributed to the slow adoption of cloud solution across the continent.
