The Siaya County Government has partnered with Kogelo Marathon in preparation of the upcoming charity road race event for Mama Sarah Obama's “Orphans and Widows Campaign” in aid of Orphans, vulnerable children, Widows and the Girl Child through an NGO Safeguard Orphans and Widows Organization (SOWO). The 2nd edition of the Mama Sarah Obama Kogelo Marathon was to be held on 19th October 2014 but has now been rescheduled to 6th December 2014 to enable the organizers plan for the event which has transformed to international status as foreign dignitaries, guests and diplomats are scheduled to grace the occasion. The event shall be held at Nyang'oma, Kogelo, Siaya County. The event shall have both 5km and 15 km road races and a family fun race for the joggers.
The event is expected to raise funds for projects in aid of orphans and widows in Kenya and especially Nyanza province which has experienced the highest number of orphans and widows who are victims of HIV/AIDS deaths. SOWO intends to support over 3,000 orphans and vulnerable children within their families by 2015 in the most affected counties across the country.
Speaking at his office on monday, The Siaya County Governor H.E Cornel Rasanga reiterated his support including the planning and logistics of the event. He encouraged Kenyans to turn up in large numbers as Siaya has enough hotels and resorts that can entertain and accommodate the guests during that weekend. Last year the event had over 1,600 local and foreign participants. It has since attracted alot of interest from international participants who are looking forward to visit Kogelo where the grandmother of the US President Barack Obama hails from. Barack Hussein Obama Snr, the father of the US President Barack Obama was alos buried there.
Some of the guests expected at this years event include Mr. Ndaba Mandela who is the grandson of Nelson Mandela, US Ambassador, Heads of various regional UN bodies and international NGOs, diplomats from various missions, local corporate leaders and government representatives.
Mama Sarah Obama has been involved in various transformative charity projects for the local communities especially in Nyanza and has become a brand ambassador for Kenya and Africa.
