Martins’ two goals and assist powered Sounders FC to a 4-2 victory over Cascadia rivals the Portland Timbers on Sunday, August 24.
Martins kicked off the scoring with the first goal of the match in the 18th minute. Seattle midfielder Brad Evans made a run down the right side of the field and sent a low ball across the front of goal that Martins directed into the back of the net from close range.
In the 34th minute, Martins initiated a counterattack following a Portland Timbers corner. Martins collected the ball in the Sounders’ half, carried it down the field and found Clint Dempsey with a perfectly weighted through ball. Dempsey slotted the ball past Timbers goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts for the 2-0 lead.
