The best of women’s football was showcased on day one of the week long tournament, which compromises of provincial league winners from the Sasol women’s league.
Kanatla Ladies from Limpopo opened the tournament against Bloemfontein Celtic. Kanatla came out 2 – 1 victors.
The Limpopo ladies scored first in the first half, while Bloemfontein Celtic levelled the score before the half – time break. Diski queen of the match Nkoinkoi Mabina sealed the three points for Kanatla in the second half.
The ladies from the Zulu Kingdom dominated most parts of the match, scoring three goals in the first stanza, with goals from Sasol Banyana Banyana player, Silindile Ngubane and a brace by Nomfudo Mchunu.
Coal City Wizard returned from the break with a mission to catch-up, scoring their only goal in the opening minutes of the second half and Zanele Chiya scoring the 4th goal for Durban Ladies with just minutes of play remaining.
The last match of day one, saw hosts Coastal United Ladies battle it out with Western Cape neighbours, Cape Town Roses.
A thrilling first half as the young ladies from Cape Town dominated possession, scoring four goals in the first 45 minutes.
The hosts retaliated with a goal before the break, but Cape Town Roses stood their ground, slotting in their 5th goal early in the second half while Coastal United only managed to get a second goal late in that half. The match ended 5 – 2 in favour of Cape Town Roses.
A great first day with a total number of 15 goals scored. Cape Town Roses lead the log standings in group A, Durban Ladies in group B and Kanatla Ladies in group C.
