Rwanda RRA stunned veterans FAP of Cameroon in the Women's African Club Championship playoffs

Cairo, Egypt, April 1, 2015 – Defending champions GS Petroliers of Algeria and the Revenue Authority of Rwanda qualified to play for the 5th and 6th positions at the 2015 Women's African Club Championship after they defeated Vision of Uganda and FAP of Cameroon, respectively, in the Playoffs 5-8 matches held at the October Hall in Cairo, Egypt on Wednesday.

RRA of Rwanda were big winners in the playoffs on Day 5 of the competition, beating experienced FAP of Cameroon 3-0 (25-20, 25-21, 25-21) in just 78 minutes. The Rwandan team controlled the entire match with strong serves that disabled the FAP defence. Charlotte Nzayisenga led RRA scorers with 15 points, while Simone Bikatal led Cameroon with 16 points. RRA also dominated the net with 14 block kills against against three from FAP.

Defending champions GS Petroliers of Algeria overcame a shaky performance to defeat Vision of Uganda 3-0 (25-21, 25-14, 25-14). The Algerian team had a sluggish start that allowed the Ugandans to take a 19-16 lead, until they regained their composure to steal a 25-21 win over the Ugandans in the first set. GS Petroliers used their serve and block to take over in the second and third sets to complete the straight-set win.

Meanwhile, ARSU of Seychelles hammered Kutiwano of Botswana in straight sets (25-20, 25-23, 25-14), while Injis of Cameroon pulled of a surprise on KCB of Kenya 3-0 (25-22, 25-13, 25-21) in the Playoffs 9-12.

ARSU outside hitter Marielle Bonne led her team to win with 16 points. The Seychelles club utilised their opponents’ mistakes to take the first set victory 25-20, which fuelled the team to take the succeeding sets. Karabo Molefha led Kutiwano scorers with nine points.

In the other playoff 9-12 match, Injis of Cameroon trounced KCB of Kenya. The winners surprised the Kenyan squad with their jump serves that immobilised their passing, eventually causing their attack strategy to suffer. Veteran Rose Ngo Nkot led the winning team with 15 points, while Naomie Too contributed seven points for KCB.

On Thursday, seven-time champions Pipeline of Kenya meet hosts Shams of Egypt, while six-time winners Ahly of Egypt face Carthage of Tunisia in the semifinals.
