Lausanne, Switzerland, January 27, 2015 - FIVB President Dr. Ary S. Graça F° asked the members of the Development Commission to help grow the popularity of volleyball globally as he opened a two-day meeting at the headquarters of the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) in Lausanne on Monday and Tuesday.

“Development is my first goal. We must take volleyball to the whole world and grow our market. We have already seen strong results in Asia and Oceania, where we are changing the way we work by promoting innovation and opportunities,” said Dr. Graça.

President Graça also spoke of the African Dream Project, which will help to organise cooperation between the FIVB, National Olympic Committees and local governments and sponsors. The project focuses on promoting volleyball in schools and getting boys and girls interested in volleyball and beach volleyball at an early age, but also encourages local authorities to get involved in actively promoting the two sports at a grassroots level.

Work is ongoing in countries where volleyball is more well-established, with the International Volleyball Federation also hoping to take the finals of its top competitions, including the FIVB Volleyball World League and the FIVB Volleyball World Grand Prix, to new venues.

Global overview
The FIVB's development programme in 2014 included 967 days of educational activities attended by approximately 4100 participants. There were 1860 participants in 62 Volleyball Cooperation Programmes, 636 certifications were delivered at 35 coaching courses, 39 technical seminars involved 1170 participants and 468 thousand participants practised their skills at 114 Volley All Festivals around the world.

Special projects were also organised in North Africa, Poland and Russia and a Coaching Support Programme put in place in Cape Verde, Chad, Kenya and Mozambique. The African Dream Project will follow in 2015 with the FIVB continuing to work with the Continental Confederations to ensure that development activities are aligned with FIVB President Graça's mandate of innovation.

The Development Commission meeting is the second in a series of FIVB Commission and Council meetings taking place in the early months of 2015.
