This is only the second time that Meyer has handed a debut to a 20 year old Number 10 since he took over as the Springboks mentor. The other being Johan Goosen, who received that honour in 2012.

“The thing that strikes me the most about Handre is that his very big for his age. It’s a big ask for him, but we sat down and discussed his selection at length. He has adapted well to training and I have a lot of confidence in him,” said Meyer during the squad announcement.
The Baby Bok skippers boot doesn’t necessarily diffencerate him, but he nudges ahead of local rivals because his willing to take more contact – and his already pretty good at it.
“Handre brings a different dynamic. He is a great defender and a very attacking number 10. I’ve always believed my number 10’s should show character and take the lead. Great flyhalves always get better with bigger pressure. I believe he has that trait. His got brilliant touches on the ball and is a strong kicker,” added Meyer.
