NEW YORK (Tuesday, March 17, 2015) – New York City FC forward David Villa was voted Major League Soccer Player of the Week by the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR) for the second week of the 2015 MLS season.
With New York City FC making its historic home debut in Yankee Stadium on Sunday night, Villa took center stage. The first captain and signing in club history delivered a goal and an assist in front of 43,000-plus fans to secure a 2-0 victory over the New England Revolution. Villa’s goal marks the first of his MLS career and the first ever NYC FC goal scored at Yankee Stadium.
Villa opened the scoring for NYC FC in the 19th minute, showcasing his class by slicing through New England’s backline before executing a nifty give-and-go with midfielder Ned Grabavoy. The captain took two touches before burying a clinical shot inside the far post, sending the club’s inaugural home crowd into a frenzy.

NYC FC added an insurance goal in the 84th minute that fortified its first MLS victory. Villa again channeled his world-class technical skills, this time shaking Revs midfielder Scott Caldwell and landing a cross onto Patrick Mullins’ right foot. Mullins, who subbed into the game just moments before, pocketed Villa’s pass inside the near post to ice the match.
