The 2014 MLS Cup Playoffs presented by AT&T will get underway on Wednesday, October 29 as the first of two Knockout Rounds kicks off when FC Dallas host Vancouver Whitecaps FC at Toyota Stadium at 9:00 p.m. ET (TSN1). Vancouver won entry into the playoffs following a thrilling head-to-head race with Cascadia rivals, the Portland Timbers. A victory on the final day against the Colorado Rapids, thanks to a lone goal from defender Kendall Waston, ensured the Whitecaps a berth. The winner of the match will advance to the next round where they will host the Supporters’ Shield winners, Seattle Sounders FC, on Sunday, November 2 at 9:00 p.m. ET (ESPN2, ESPN Deportes, TSN2).
In the Eastern Conference Knockout Round, Sporting Kansas City will pay the New York Red Bulls a visit on Thursday, October 30 in hopes of turning around the 2-0 defeat they suffered in the final game of the regular season (8:00 p.m. ET on ESPN2, ESPN Deportes and TSN2). After notching two goals against SKC, the 2014 Budweiser Golden Boot winner, Bradley Wright-Phillips, will look to continue his goal scoring ways in order to keep his team in MLS Cup contention. The two goals lifted Wright-Phillips’ total tally to 27, tying the MLS all-time single-season goals scored record. The winner will face Eastern Conference leaders, D.C. United, at RFK Stadium on Sunday, November 2 at 4:00 p.m. ET (UDN).
In a rematch of last year’s Western Conference Semifinal, the LA Galaxy will face Real Salt Lake on Saturday, November 1 at 8:00 p.m. ET (NBCSN, RDS2). In the 2013 MLS Cup Playoffs, RSL came out of the home-and-home series as victors, advancing to the Western Conference Championship where it defeated Portland Timbers to earn a spot in the MLS Cup final in Kansas City. Landon Donovan and the Galaxy will look to return the favor this season and continue Donovan’s send off into the latter stages of the playoffs.
In the second Eastern Conference Semifinal game, the New England Revolution will travel to play the Columbus Crew on Saturday, November 1 at 4:00 p.m. ET (UDN). Both teams finished the season strongly with New England benefiting from an impressive run of performances from star midfielder Lee Nguyen. The two teams are no strangers to one another in the postseason, having met twice in the MLS Cup Playoffs (2002 and 2004). The Revs bested their Eastern Conference opponents on both occasions.
