Cagliari, Italy, October 30, 2014 – FIVB President Dr. Ary S. Graça F° encouraged the representatives of all category I and II National Federations to take advantage of the opportunities made available for their development and the expansion of volleyball and beach volleyball worldwide.
“Our goal is to provide innovation and opportunities for those who want to work and believe in themselves to move on,” Dr. Graça said. “We have problems but we also have solutions to your problems.”
President Graça added that the FIVB has invested over $25m in development programmes over the last two years, through the five continental confederations.
“In 2012, we invested $12m and $13.5m in 2013 in our development programmes,” Dr. Graça said.
“In some continents we have had extraordinary results, with most of the problems solved in NORCECA and South America whose teams are participating in all the competitions,” he said. “We are working intensively with Europe, and Africa is implementing the African Dream programme that we want to adapt to Asia.”
Dr. Graça said that the FIVB is working closely with the confederations and the different zones within those continental institutions.
“Our main concern are those countries currently in level I and II and I hope this seminar will be helpful for their development and I can say that with hard work you are going to improve,” he added.
He recalled his early days back in 1975 as vice president of the Brazilian Federation when they started to work without any kind of help but only believing in themselves while their country was going through financially difficult times.
“That’s the message I want to transmit,” he said. “We believed in ourselves and with a lot of courage we were able to organise a Junior World Championship, so you can do it.”
President Graça added that: “We are here to stimulate you, but development is not only money but also desire to do things and get the attention from your governments about what you are doing."
Among the FIVB's new initiatives, Dr. Graça also mentioned the e-learning programme that will allow the participation of more people without the need to travel, reducing costs in a significant manner.
FIVB President Dr. Ary S. Graça F° concluded his opening words by saying that: “You are here to learn based on the experience of others and learn with desire and courage, and I am sure you are going to succeed.”
