Two-time world champion boxer, Amir Khan, has been soaking up the atmosphere at Glasgow 2014 on the eve of a weekend which will see 13 new boxing champions crowned.

And, for the first time ever at a Commonwealth Games, some of those going for Gold will be women including Olympic champion Nicola Adams and Northern Ireland hopeful Michaela Walsh.

The stage will be set at the SSE Hydro for a thrilling competition with the Home Nations in strong position for medal glory.  The men will compete across three rounds of three minutes and the women will compete across four rounds of two minutes each.

Scotland is guaranteed at least five boxing medals, with Josh Taylor, Reece McFadden and Charlie Flynn among those guaranteed at least a bronze. Teenage flyweight McFadden has taken the Games by storm, having surprisingly beaten world amateur number one Andrew Selby and later Charlie Edwards, to set up an exciting semi-final fight.

Northern Ireland is guaranteed at least nine boxing medals, with light-flyweight Paddy Barnes, flyweight Michaela Walsh, bantamweight Michael Conlan, welterweight Steven Donnelly and middleweight Connor Coyle among the throng. Barnes and Conlan also won bronzes at the London 2012 Olympics.

Wales are guaranteed at least 4 boxing medals, with Sean McGoldrick meeting Northern Ireland’s Michael Conlan on Friday.

England is guaranteed at least seven boxing medals, with London 2012 Olympics Champion Nicola Adams and Joe Joyce included in the haul. Adams has been fundamental in raising the profile of women’s boxing. Nicola will fight Canada’s Mandy Bujold, the reigning Pan American Games champion, in the semi-final. England’s national champion Qais Ashfaq – a close friend of Amir Khan – will also be fighting.

Speaking today, (Friday 1 August), Amir said:

“Glasgow is absolutely buzzing right now and the atmosphere is great.

“There are a lot of high quality fighters here and they are fighting for their home fans and home nation which will really give them the drive to do it. Boxing is one of the most popular sports in the Commonwealth – I would say that as a boxer – and really popular in Scotland.

“Women’s boxing in particular is amazing and the quality here is really great including Olympic champion Nicola Adams. I would encourage as many people as possible to come down and experience some great boxing in a great venue.”

Tickets for Boxing are still available with organisers encouraging fans not to miss out on the opportunity to see the Home Nations add to their medal haul.

Other tickets available for tomorrow include – Powerlifting, Squash, Hockey and Athletics.

Tickets can be bought on the website at tickets.glasgow2014.com or by calling 0800 458 2014. They are also available on the door with the Venue Ticket Offices opening from 8am tomorrow morning. Spectators are advised to arrive in good time to buy or collect tickets as it is expected to be very busy.
