NEW YORK (Thursday, Dec. 4, 2014) – Major League Soccer’s most spectacular individual plays were recognized today as Seattle Sounders FC forward Obafemi Martins earned the 2014 AT&T Goal of the Year and New York Red Bulls goalkeeper Luis Robles broke Nick Rimando’s two-year streak by winning the 2014 Save of the Year.
It only took one goal for Seattle Sounders FC to best the San Jose Earthquakes at CenturyLink Field in Week 11 of the MLS regular season. Yet, it was the sheer beauty of the strike by Sounders’ marksman Obafemi Martins that earned it the goal of the year status. The Nigerian forward scored eight minutes into the match by floating a shot from a near-impossible angle into the back of the net to the delight of an awestruck crowd in Seattle.

The AT&T Goal of the Year was determined by an online fan vote, after 64 initial nominations for the award were eventually narrowed to four finalists. The final poll results for the four finalists:

T. Henry (NY) vs. SKC, 9/6 – 13.22%

It was so nice, New York Red Bulls goalkeeper Luis Robles did it twice. On September 20, New York thumped Seattle Sounders FC 4-1, but the margin risked being much tighter had it not been for the heroics of Robles. After a shot by midfielder Marco Pappa took a deflection off a Red Bull defender, Robles managed to steady himself and keep the ball out of the net. The rebound fell kindly to forward Clint Dempsey who confidently headed the ball at mere feet from goal only to be denied by another miraculous save by Robles.
