The climax of the inaugural Ugandan Women Elite League looks set to have an intriguing sub-plot to it, as two generations of the same household go head-to-head for the title.
When Buikwe She Red Stars tackle Kawempe Muslim Secondary School in the final on Saturday mother and daughter will be lining up on opposite sides. Buike's Annet Nakimbugwe will face off against her offspring Hasfa Nassuna in what will be a family affair in Lugongo.
The two have already met twice this season, with youth prevailing on both occasions. “I wanted to play in the final,” Nassuna explained after an instrumental showing in her side's semi-final win over She Corporates. “I knew my mother wasn’t supporting Kawempe but wanted to see me succeed. So, let’s meet in the final but we are more than ready to win this trophy.”

After monitoring her daughter's side closely throughout the season, Nakimbugwe – whose side saw off Western United to tee-up a shot at the title – knows her familiar opponent, amongst others, will be a real handful. “I have to keep a close eye on the Kawempe team because it is dangerous. My daughter is lethal with the ball,” she admitted, “and we shall find a plan to control both their star players Nassuna and Sandra Nabweteme”.
While the game will pit youthful exuberance and experience against one another, one thing that's for sure is when it comes to Uganadan women's football there is one family who are very much ruling the roost so far.
