Giovinco becomes the first player to earn back-to-back Player of the Month selections this season. In six matches during the month of August, the dynamic forward turned in four goals and three assists, boosting Toronto FC into fourth place in the Eastern Conference (11-10-4, 37 points). For the season, Giovinco ranks second in MLS in goals (17) and is tied for second in assists (13). With his remarkable performances for Toronto, Italian National Team head coach Antonio Conte rewarded Giovinco with a call up for an upcoming pair of 2016 EURO qualifiers; however, an abductor injury will prevent him from representing the Azzurri this week.
Giovinco again terrorized Orlando City SC on August 22, recording a goal and assist in TFC’s 5-0 win. The Atomic Ant doubled the Reds’ lead in the 56th minute by smashing another long-range free kick past keeper Tally Hall, banking it in off the far post (watch goal). Later, in the 71st minute, Giovinco helped engineer a picturesque scoring opportunity for Justin Morrow, who tapped in Toronto’s third goal (watch assist).
Toronto FC returns to MLS action this Saturday, when it visits Seattle Sounders FC at CenturyLink Field 10:00 p.m. ET (TSN2).
