At 30-years-old, the Sporting Kansas City midfielder is submitting the best MLS campaign of his career and doing so by a significant margin. In 2014, Feilhaber set regular season career-highs with 31 appearances, four goals, six assists, and more than 2,600 minutes played. Through 24 regular season appearances this year, he has eight goals and 13 assists (tied for second-most in MLS) in nearly 2,100 minutes – and that doesn’t account for the two goals and five assists he has tallied so far in the 2015 U.S. Open Cup. With nine league matches remaining, Feilhaber is on pace to shatter his already-doubled career highs across the board, and he’ll look to continue his adding onto his totals this week when Sporting KC visits the Portland Timbers at Providence Park on Wednesday, Sept. 9 (10:30 p.m. ET, MLS LIVE) and then Orlando City SC at the Citrus Bowl on MLS Soccer Sunday (7 p.m. ET, FOX Sports 1, FOX Deportes).
Media might expect “a lot of words” from Feilhaber because he has never been shy to share them. The Benny Feilhaber Show – a critically acclaimed, original Sporting Kansas City production – showcased his improvisational dance and lips sync skills, “delicious” hair, and hard-hitting interview acumen. Whenever he hangs up the cleats, Feilhaber could threaten the likes of Colbert and Fallon on the late-night television circuit.
Until then, the MLS MVP candidate will continue driving Sporting KC’s midfield with creativity and precision. Whether Feilhaber’s outstanding form garners him another look with the U.S. Men’s National Team remains to be seen. Either way, with a U.S. Open Cup trophy within reach and an MLS Cup Playoffs berth likely forthcoming, he is focused on winning trophies.
“We won MLS Cup in 2013. We're in the finals of Open Cup this year,” he said. “Both years that I've been here, we've made it into the playoffs. This year, we should definitely make it into the playoffs again and vie for another championship. So that's why I came here, and the personal success comes with the team success. That's what it's all about.”
