Three days after leading Sporting Kansas City through a dramatic round of penalty kicks in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup final (watch highlights), Melia one-upped himself with another spectacular performance at Providence Park on Saturday night. Sporting KC had only three days between celebrating its title and shifting its focus to a critical road match versus the Portland Timbers, but it didn’t faze Melia, who turned in six saves and a clean sheet to vault his club back into Supporters’ Shield contention.
In the 35th minute, Melia robbed the Timbers of another prime scoring chance, this time with a fully-extended effort to reel in a curling shot from Darlington Nagbe (watch save).
Sporting Kansas City returns to MLS action next Friday, October 16, when it heads to Avaya Stadium to take on the San Jose Earthquakes at 11:00 p.m. ET (UniMás).
