Sherrington will be in charge of the team’s Group I opening fixtures in 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against the Falcons of Jediane of Sudan in Khartoum on June 12-14.
The former Mighty Blackpool and national U-23 coach will be assisted by two former Leone Stars players Charlie Wright- FC Kallon head coach and Joseph Tobie- former assistant coach Real Republicans coach.
“His appointment is only for this match because we are in the process of appointing our new coach and that could not be done before the Sudan match so we decided to let him (Sherrington) take over and appoint his technical team,” the SLFA media head said.
In May, the SLFA advertised the vacant job for senior national team with the application deadline already exceed the announcing of a new coach is yet to be named.
The row over head coach and backroom staff was the highlight of Sierra Leone 2015 AFCON campaign with both the SLFA and sports ministry announcing two separate sets of coaches for Cameroon’s double header.
Sierra Leone has only managed to participate twice in the continental big stage in 1994 and 1996. Swede coach Roger Palmgren was not yet 30 when he coached Sierra Leone at the 1996 African Nations Cup finals in South Africa and declared an interest in the job again when it became available in 2002.
In Tunisia, 1994 French coach Raymond Zarpanelian was in charge of the Sierra Leone team.
