Elated Elias Emigdio seals Flyweight glory after Mexico City masterpiece
A thrilling duo of AIBA Pro Boxing (APB) Cycle I Round 2 Flyweight (52 kg) matches entertained the boxing world on Sunday night in Mexico City, Mexico.
In a captivating main event, Elias Emigdio (MEX) delighted the packed crowd in the arena by defeating Ilyas Suleimenov (KAZ) by unanimous decision.
Inspired by the presence of international teammates Joselito Velazquez and Lindolfo Delgado who won gold and silver medals at the recent Toronto 2015 Pan American Games at ringside, Emigdio used the most aggressive tactics we have seen from him thus far in APB to establish control early.
It was Suleimenov who many expected to produce the power shots after he had already stopped three opponents in this competition, but the Mexican WSB veteran planted his feet in the opening stages to assert his dominance.
This was a rematch of an earlier APB match which saw Emigdio emerge victorious, and he looked on course to do so again as the first few rounds progressed.
Suleimenov began to rally however, and stunned his opponent with a stiff shot in the third round before Emigdio responded in kind with a powerful left hand shortly after.
The action began to tilt on a pendulum, as one man would gain the upper hand before the other stormed back to remind the judges that they were very much still in the contest.
Emigdio soaked up the huge support in the arena as the fight neared its climax, and despite slipping in the seventh frame, he managed to maintain composure and claim the victory despite the incredible effort from his Kazakh rival.
After all eight rounds had been completed, the building erupted in glee as their Mexican hero was named the winner 77:75 on all three scorecards.
In the second Flyweight match on the night, Fernando Martinez (ARG) sensationally defeated Jasurbek Latipov (UZB) by TKO.
Match Results:
- Fernando MARTINEZ (ARG) TKO R4 vs Jasurbek LATIPOV (UZB)
- Elias EMIGDIO (MEX) W.P. (77:75/77:75/77:75) vs Ilyas SULEIMENOV (KAZ)

Romero stops Kyslytsyn in APB Light Welterweight classic
Two key AIBA Pro Boxing (APB) Cycle I Round 2 Light Welterweight (64 kg) matches took place on Sunday night in Mexico City, Mexico where Juan Pablo Romero (MEX) stopped Vyceslav Kyslytsyn (UKR) in the main event.
Cheered warmly by his home supporters as he made his way to the ring wearing his traditional sombrero, Romero began the bout with serious intent when a series of left hooks pulverised both the head and body of his European opponent.
The WSB Season II Individual Champion spoke about his intent to negate Kyslytsyn’s strength before the fight, and did so in the first round by using rapid combination punching in successful fashion.
Kyslytsyn soaked up the pressure however, and began to march forward in the second frame with an excellent jab stemming the flow of punches from Romero.
A similar pattern occurred in round three when the excellent fundamentals of Kyslytsyn battled the entertaining style of his unorthodox Mexican rival.
As the middle stages of the contest began to materialise, the majority of spectators believed they were set for an eight round war, but Romero had other ideas and stopped the Ukrainian after another series of blistering shots.
The victory was greeted with much applause in the Plaza Condesa, and Romero can now celebrate his second consecutive APB victory and a move up the rankings as a result.
In the second Light Welterweight match to feature in Mexico, Chabane Fehim (FRA) widely outpointed Yoelvis Hernandez (VEN) in a mesmerising bout.
Match Results:
- Yoelvis HERNANDEZ (VEN) vs Chabane FEHIM (FRA) W.P. (72:80/74:78/73:79)
- Juan Pablo ROMERO (MEX) TKO R5 vs Vyacheslav KYSLYTSYN (UKR)
