The United States U-23 team is one step closer to qualifying for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro after their 6-1 win over Cuba on Saturday. Real Salt Lake’s Luis Gil dished out two assists, while New York Red Bulls defender Matt Miazga bagged a goal in the win over Cuba. With the victory, the U.S. clinched a spot to the semifinal round of Olympic Qualifying. Coupled with their 3-1 opening round win over Canada on Thursday, which featured a penalty kick goal from Gil and an assist from Columbus’ Wil Trapp, the U.S. secured a top two spot in Group A. The Yanks can grab the top spot in Group A when they play their last group stage match on Tuesday, October 6 against Panama at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park (9:30 p.m. ET, NBC Universo). The winners of Saturday’s two semifinal matches automatically qualify for the 2016 Olympic Games, while the winner of the third-place match will go up against Colombia in a one-game playoff for the final Olympic berth.
