Sports and Recreation Minister, Makhosini Hlongwane is expected to deliver the keynote address.
A local sporting and tourist support organisation, Olympic-Quest is facilitating the indaba which will pave way for a series of sporting events in the province starting from December until April next year.
Olympic-Quest corporate affairs secretary, Tapfumaneyi Gwekwerere said the sports indaba seeks to find solutions to the plummeting sporting standards in the province with a view to finding strategies to bring back the “glory of yesterday.”
“The main areas of focus will be the sporting infrastructure in relation to the infrastructure that can be developed through public private partnerships and also how the grassroots can benefit from sporting interventions so that we can bring the glory of yesterday,” he said.
Gwekwerere said the province can easily become the pinnacle of sport in the country considering the length and breadth of the province which has produced some sporting superstars like Paralympic gold medallist, Elliot Mujaji, former Commonwealth champion, Langton Tinago and Sharon Tavengwa among others.
The indaba will be preceded by a series of sporting events which will begin with the Mr and Miss Iron muscle bodybuilding championships.
The climax of the sporting series will be the holding of the Boterekwa Marathon which will involve local and regional athletes in Shurugwi and has been slated for April next year.
