The Imonti Penguins from East London on Saturday claimed the Women’s Club Champions title at the City Park Stadium in Athlone, Cape Town, after defeating Port Elizabeth’s Kwaru Rugby Football Club 19-10 in the final of the annual competition.
The Imonti Penguins, who were led by Zintle Mpupa, the Border Women’s Interprovincial vice-captain, defeated the Busy Bee Ladies 22-15 in their opening match and then beat the Pniel Ladies 20-10 to book their place in the final.
Kwaru Rugby Football Club, meanwhile, registered a 29-17 victory against the Middelburg Stormers before defeating Jaguars Rugby Football Club 19-0 to secure their final berth.
The Imonti Penguins, however, were dominant in the final and earned the rewards as they emerged 19-10 victors.
The victory capped off a fantastic year for Border Women’s rugby, as the senior team won the SARU Women’s Interprovincial Competition for the third successive year earlier this season, while their Under-18 Women’s team won the South Section of the SARU Women’s Youth Training Centre Women’s Day Celebrations.
The Busy Bees Ladies, meanwhile, won the Plate Final tin a sudden-death playoff against the Middleburg Stormers.
The Pniel Ladies finished the tournament in fifth position, while the Jaguars Rugby Football Club finished sixth, Mamelodi seventh and the University of Limpopo eighth.
