The Ethiopian side had full domination all through. They began scoring in the first minute when Dawit Fekadu found the net after collecting a pass from Shimeles Bekele. Despite the early lead the Ethiopian side didn’t add goals in the first half.
The Ethiopian team head coach Yohanes Sahile said that reversing the 1-0 deficit was in our reach. “We faced an upset in Sao Tome but our players were determined to reverse that defeat. We did it as we expected. We performed well. We were even in a position to score more. In the dying minute we wasted three clear scoring opportunities”, the coach said.
Sao Tome’s top striker Luis Leal Anjos expressed disappointment with the defeat. “But,” he said, “Our opponents played well so that they deserve the win. We failed to keep our 1-0 advantage, this is sad.”
The Addis Ababa stadium was full to capacity. Many people came to the stadium just to watch the performance of Sao Tome and Principe that won over their side. Few expected that they would win over the Ethiopian side in the first leg.
