Cairo, Egypt, July 24, 2015 – Hosts Egypt and Algeria became the first two teams to secure semifinal tickets at 2015 Men's African Nations Championship after both teams marked their second straight-sets victories on Day 3 of the competition held at Cairo Stadium Complex on Friday.
Egypt topped Botswana 3-0 (25-19, 25-14, 25-10), while Algeria overcame a comeback by Kenya in the second set to win 3-0 (25-17, 28-26, 25-23).
Egypt head the standings on points ratio ahead of Algeria. Both are now 2-0 with six points, while Kenya and Botswana are both 0-2.
Morocco lead the pool with six points from a 2-0 record, followed by Cameroon (2-1, five points), Tunisia (1-1, four points), Rwanda (1-1, three points) and Mauritius, who are 0-3.
The African Championship acts as a qualifier for the 2015 FIVB Men's World Cup in Japan in September, with the top two teams securing tickets to Tokyo.
The competition resumes on Saturday with four matches in both pools. Pool A features Algeria v Egypt for the top of the pool and Kenya-Botswana for third position, while in Pool B, Rwanda face Tunisia and Morocco line up against Mauritius.
Pool A
Algeria v Kenya 3-0 (25-17, 28-26, 25-23)
Algeria overcame the solid Kenya team in a match lasting 86 minutes.
Opposite spiker Toufik Mahdjoubi and outside hitter Mohamed Chikhi led the scorers for the winners, while Michael Chemos led Kenya and the match scorers with 17 points.
The Kenyan team were very competitive especially in the second set that saw the best rallies of the match, but the experience of the Algerian hitters settled the situation in the end.
Egypt v Botswana 3-0 (25-19, 25-14, 25-10)
Egypt played with a number of substitutes but succeeded in overpowering Botswana in 63 minutes. Ahmed Kotb finished as best scorer for Egypt with 15 points, while Kabo Moetse finished as best Botswana scorer.
Pool B
Tunisia v Mauritius 3-0 (25-13, 25-13, 25-7)
Record holders Tunisia recovered from opening loss against Cameroon to cruise past Mauritius in Pool B.
The Tunisian coach Fathi Mkaouer played with substitutes such as Hichem Kaabi and Ismail Moalla who didn't play in the first match to give new impetus to the team. The Tunisians dominated with their tight block, picking up 12 kill blocks against four for the Mauritians.
Hichem Kaabi led Tunisian scorers with 16 points, while the best for the Mauritian side was Kevin Larose with four points.
Cameroon v Morocco 3-1 (25-18, 21-25, 30-28, 25-21)
Morocco upset Cameroon in one of the competition’s most exciting encounters, lasting 129 minutes. Moroccan opposite spiker Mohamed Hachdadi marked 27 points, the second best scoring performance in the competition so far, to lead his team to a valuable victory. As usual, Jean Ndaki was the top Cameroon scorer as he contributed 22 points for his team.
