A new sporting event is coming to South Africa, and the anticipation is building. Adrenaline junkies, sports enthusiasts and all those who respect the skill and grit that pugilism requires will be able to witness SA’s most talented fighters, going head to head in the Last Fighter Standing (LFS) tournament, which will draw on fighters from qualification rounds held in Cape Town, Durban, Johannesburg and Port Elizabeth, before bringing together the final combatants for an explosive final round at the Ticketpro Dome in Johannesburg on the 12th of November 2016.

LFS is a new style of combat sport that has taken the world by storm. Combining the best of boxing and mixed martial arts, it focuses on a fighter’s stand-up game. By limiting the time the fighters can spend grappling or wrestling on the ground, it calls on participants to draw on all of their strength and determination to beat their opponents and promises spectacular knock-outs and thrilling fight finishes. LFS has been designed with the fans in mind, and takes place in a unique hexagon ring with cameras on every corner. This means that spectators get an uninterrupted 360-degree view of the action.

LFS, which is an international concept with a number of global tournaments planned, has partnered with Fight Club SA, a local brand which trains fighters in boxing, kickboxing, muay thai and mixed martial arts. This partnership will oversee the pioneering LFS tournament and give local fighters a platform to compete on that showcases their skills. According to Rudi van der Westhuizen, Owner of Fight Club SA, “This tournament, which will be rolled out more broadly across Africa eventually, is an incredible opportunity for fighters to make a name for themselves. For the first time, countries that have little or no input into other sports will be represented, and could produce an African champion.” He also notes that LFS packs a powerful punch in terms of entertainment value: “The event is structured to have a number of elimination rounds and fighters will progress based on merit. This means that only the best of the best will make it through, and guarantees action that will have you on the edge of your seat.” Given that boxing has an increasingly poor following in South Africa, particularly amongst youth, Rudi believes that LFS could spark a renewed interest in the sport, and could encourage young athletes to participate.

Brandon Duffield from the Ticketpro, which is partnering with LFS to bring this electrifying event to life, says, “We think that the scope and energy of the LFS concept will give audiences more of the action that they crave, and the Ticketpro Dome is very excited to be a part of this event.”

Bertus Coetzee, the President of MMA South Africa, is equally excited about what LFS will bring to the MMA community: “LFS is a new and fresh fighting format catering to a different type of MMA fighter. I feel that it will shake up the sport – plus the amount of exposure being generated in South Africa for MMA, especially around these novel formats, will be great for future generations of SA fighters.”

Dates for the qualification rounds will be released closer to the time, and tickets for the Finals will be available from the Ticketpro website. For more information on LFS go to http://www.lastfighterstanding.com/ and for more information on Fight Club SA go to http://www.fightclubsa.com/.
