The Mexican Football Federation has filed a trademark-infringement lawsuit against prediction-market operator Kalshi, alleging that the platform used the Liga MX name and club logos without authorization to promote sports-related trading contracts. The federation is seeking a court order preventing further use of the protected marks, together with financial damages for the alleged infringement. Kalshi argues that displaying the names and logos constitutes fair use because the marks identify the sporting events associated with its markets—an argument similar to the defense being advanced by DraftKings in a separate dispute involving the NCAA.
The case could help determine how far prediction and betting platforms may go when commercially presenting sports events without licensing the underlying intellectual property. A ruling against Kalshi could strengthen the ability of leagues and federations to protect—and monetize—their names, club identities and digital betting inventory as regulated prediction markets expand.
