European clubs spent more than €10 billion acquiring players from other clubs during the summer transfer window, with English teams accounting for almost half of the total. The scale of that spending has prompted a warning from UEFA finance chief Andrea Traverso, who argues that rising transfer fees are making clubs financially vulnerable. English clubs paid an average of approximately €24 million per incoming player, compared with less than €5 million across Europe’s other major leagues, leaving them particularly exposed if player valuations decline.

The danger is amplified by transfer fees being paid in instalments over several years, creating substantial future liabilities that remain even when a player underperforms or loses market value. England’s commercial strength can support aggressive recruitment, but clubs relying on continually rising transfer prices risk building debt faster than sustainable sporting and operating revenues can absorb it.
