Kenya's Sheila Chepkirui captured the women's title at the 2026 TCS New York City Marathon on Sunday, November 1, finishing in 2:24:36 to secure her second victory in three years. Sweden's Andreas Almgren won the men's race on his marathon debut, while Kamohelo Mofolo of Lesotho finished third, becoming the first athlete from his country to reach the New York podium. Organizers reported nearly 60,000 participating athletes and more than two million spectators along the five-borough course, reinforcing the event's position among the world's premier mass-participation sports properties.
Beyond the elite results, the marathon demonstrates how distance running can be commercialized through sponsorship, broadcasting, destination tourism, merchandise, hospitality and mass participation. Title sponsor Tata Consultancy Services anchors an event whose value extends well beyond the professional field. For Africa, where athletes continue to dominate major international road races, the opportunity is to build stronger African-owned running properties that retain more event revenues, attract international participants and create sustainable economic benefits for host cities.
