The global sports economy generates approximately $2.3 trillion in annual revenues, according to the [World Economic Forum](https://www.weforum.org/publications/sports-for-people-and-planet/?utm_source=chatgpt.com) and Oliver Wyman’s Sports for People and Planet research. The estimate captures a broad sports economy extending beyond professional leagues and teams to include areas such as sports tourism, sporting goods and participation-related activity. The research projects that annual revenues could rise to approximately $3.7 trillion by 2030 and $8.8 trillion by 2050, underscoring sport’s expanding role within the global economy.

Importantly, the $2.3 trillion figure is annual revenue—not a $2.3 trillion valuation of the global sports industry. Valuation measures the estimated worth of an asset or business, while revenue measures economic income generated over a defined period. That distinction matters as investors increasingly view sport as an investable economic ecosystem encompassing media rights, teams and leagues, venues, technology, tourism, consumer products and athlete-led businesses. For Africa, capturing even a larger fraction of this expanding economy will depend on converting the continent’s enormous sporting participation and audiences into stronger commercial rights, infrastructure, intellectual property, tourism, technology and investable sports enterprises.
