The WNBA’s commercial momentum continues to accelerate after the August 23 Indiana Fever–Chicago Sky game averaged 3.31 million viewers across NBC and Peacock, making it the league’s most-watched regular-season game since the opening weekend of its inaugural 1997 season. The broadcast peaked at 3.82 million viewers, while NBC says its first seven WNBA games this season have averaged 1.75 million viewers, up 35% from comparable coverage last year.
That audience growth strengthens the economic argument behind the league’s new media-rights cycle and provides sponsors with more valuable national inventory. The broader lesson for African women’s sport is important: commercial growth follows when elite competition, recognizable athletes, consistent television windows and broad distribution reinforce each other over time. Strong audience data can then become the foundation for higher sponsorship fees, media-rights negotiations and athlete endorsement opportunities.
