Global investment firm Carlyle has entered a strategic partnership with Circuit of The Americas, providing capital to accelerate the development of COTALAND and additional destination attractions including a planned water park and, longer term, an on-site resort. COTA will remain locally owned and operated, while Carlyle’s Global Credit platform finances the next phase of expansion around the home of the Formula 1 United States Grand Prix, MotoGP, NASCAR, endurance racing and major concerts.

The deal is a strong example of the shift from sports venue to sports-and-entertainment district. COTA is using the economic gravity of Formula 1 as an anchor for hospitality, tourism, leisure and real-estate activity that can generate revenue throughout the year rather than only on race weekends. For African stadium and event developers, the lesson is direct: the strongest facility economics increasingly come from building destinations around the sport, not simply building seats around the field.
