A high-powered investor consortium led by British businessman Amit Bhatia is reportedly exploring the acquisition of a minority stake in Liverpool FC, potentially bringing some of the world’s most prominent technology wealth into the ownership structure of one of football’s biggest global brands. According to the report, the group includes Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin and is in discussions over acquiring an interest from Liverpool’s American owner, Fenway Sports Group (FSG). Should negotiations produce an agreement, the transaction would represent another significant intersection between global technology capital and elite sport, where scarce, internationally recognized football properties are increasingly being viewed as long-term investment assets rather than simply traditional clubs.

Liverpool’s enormous international following, Premier League position, commercial partnerships, media exposure and global merchandising operation make the club particularly attractive to institutional and ultra-high-net-worth investors seeking exposure to the expanding sports economy. FSG has previously demonstrated a willingness to introduce minority capital without relinquishing control of Liverpool. In 2023, investment firm Dynasty Equity acquired approximately a 3% interest for nearly $200 million, providing an important valuation reference point for subsequent investment discussions. A new transaction involving substantially higher-profile investors could provide Liverpool and FSG with additional capital while allowing the existing ownership group to retain strategic control of the club.

The broader commercial significance could extend well beyond Liverpool. Football’s largest clubs increasingly sit at the convergence of sport, entertainment, technology, streaming, data, digital commerce and global consumer brands, making them particularly appealing to investors whose fortunes were created in the technology economy. If a consortium featuring figures such as Bezos and Saverin ultimately takes a position in Liverpool, it would reinforce the accelerating institutionalization of football ownership and further demonstrate why premium clubs are attracting capital from investors who see global sport as one of the next major frontiers for media and consumer growth. For the Premier League, already home to extensive American and international investment, another blockbuster minority transaction would underline the extraordinary financial value now attached to its leading franchises.
