WAFCON 2026 SECURES MAJOR UK BROADCAST BOOST AS CHANNEL 4 EXPANDS FREE-TO-AIR COVERAGE

The 2026 CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) has secured an important international distribution boost, with Channel 4 expanding access to the tournament’s knockout stages for audiences across the United Kingdom. Quarter-final and semi-final action is being made available through Channel 4 Sport’s YouTube operation, while the WAFCON final will receive television exposure on E4, providing CAF’s flagship women’s competition with a valuable free-to-air platform in one of the world’s most commercially important football markets. The agreement represents more than additional television coverage: it places Africa’s leading female footballers before new international audiences at the tournament’s most consequential stage and provides an opportunity for WAFCON to strengthen its identity as a genuinely global sports property.

Commercially, expanded UK distribution could become particularly important for CAF and the long-term economics of African women’s football. International free-to-air exposure creates measurable audiences beyond the continent that can strengthen future negotiations around media rights, sponsorship packages and digital inventory, while simultaneously increasing the commercial visibility of participating national teams and individual players. As investment in women’s football accelerates internationally, WAFCON’s ability to demonstrate meaningful viewership in markets such as the UK could help CAF command greater value from broadcasters and corporate partners in future cycles. It is another indication that African women’s football is developing not simply as a continental competition, but as an increasingly valuable international entertainment and commercial property.
