The Mumbai Cricket Association has awarded Aspect Sports the operating rights for a new Navi Mumbai franchise in the T20 Mumbai League for ₹106.88 crore over six years, expanding the competition from eight to nine teams. The first-season franchise fee will be ₹12.21 crore. The MCA says the expansion is intended to broaden the league's geographic reach while creating more opportunities for emerging cricketers from Navi Mumbai to enter the professional ecosystem.
The transaction is another useful indicator of how aggressively regional cricket IP is being monetized in India. Importantly, this is not an IPL franchise—it is a city-level competition still capable of generating a nine-figure-rupee rights commitment from an investor. That distinction should interest African sports executives. African leagues often assume meaningful franchise value can exist only at continental or national scale, but commercially coherent regional competitions can create valuable assets when they combine recognizable talent, local identity, broadcast distribution, sponsorship and player-development pathways. The lesson is not simply to copy cricket's franchise model; it is to build competition IP strongly enough that investors are willing to pay for the right to participate in its future growth.
