National Bank of Malawi’s expanded football investment is now translating into competition on the ground after the NBM Women’s Premiership opened its new season, backed by K400 million from the bank’s wider K2.3 billion annual football package. The three-year partnership with the Football Association of Malawi represents a 147% increase from K930 million, with K1.3 billion allocated to the women’s national team, the Scorchers, K400 million to the Women’s Premiership and K600 million to the men’s Under-23 competition. The bank said it was encouraged by the opening weekend’s crowds and quality of competition.

What makes the agreement particularly important is its structure. NBM is investing simultaneously in the national team, domestic women’s league and player-development pathway, rather than buying visibility around a single event. That creates an integrated football ecosystem capable of producing athletes, audiences and recurring content for the sponsor. For African corporations considering sports investment, Malawi offers a useful model: long-term sponsorship can become development capital when money is deliberately distributed across the sporting value chain rather than concentrated exclusively at senior national-team level.
