AFRICA’S 54 VOTES MOVE INTO FOCUS AS INFANTINO HEADS TOWARD CAF STRATEGY SUMMIT

Gianni Infantino has been invited to a two-day Confederation of African Football Strategy Conference in Cape Verde on October 7–8 as the FIFA president faces growing political pressure ahead of his expected re-election campaign in March 2027. Reuters reports that CAF President Patrice Motsepe remains a strong Infantino supporter and that Africa’s 54 FIFA member associations could become critically important in the 211-member election if a challenger emerges. The meeting comes after FIFA’s controversial proposal to sell up to 20% of a new commercial entity controlling major FIFA competition assets encountered opposition from UEFA, CONCACAF and the Asian Football Confederation.

This is sports politics with potentially enormous financial consequences for Africa. FIFA development distributions, World Cup participation, infrastructure programs and future competition structures all intersect with the relationship between Zurich and Africa’s federations. The continent therefore possesses considerable collective influence—but the important question is how that influence is converted into greater investment, stronger African competitions, infrastructure, media value and institutional development. Africa’s votes should ultimately carry economic weight commensurate with the continent’s importance to world football.
