World Athletics is preparing to introduce a more entertainment-driven version of elite track and field when its inaugural Ultimate Championship takes place in Budapest from September 11–13. Among the most striking innovations will be a live “lane draft” for the men’s and women’s 200 metres, allowing athletes—selecting in world-ranking order—to choose their preferred semifinal heat and lane in front of fans and media. High jump and pole vault will also guarantee an outright champion, with first-place ties settled through jump-offs, while other field events will use a progressively reduced format, cutting the field from eight athletes to six and ultimately four after the opening attempts. Television coverage will incorporate augmented graphics showing projected finishing positions and real-time win probabilities, while live fan feedback will become part of the broadcast experience.

The changes reveal something larger about Sebastian Coe and World Athletics’ commercial strategy: track and field is increasingly being redesigned not simply as a competition, but as a modern entertainment product capable of competing for younger audiences, broadcast attention and sponsorship investment. Olympic champion Noah Lyles has helped develop athlete introductions and presentation elements, while pole vault superstar Mondo Duplantis has created the championship’s anthem—placing athletes themselves at the center of the product-development process. If successful, the Ultimate Championship could provide athletics with a valuable laboratory for innovations that eventually spread to other competitions, demonstrating how technology, storytelling, athlete personalities, data visualization and faster formats can transform one of the world’s oldest sports for the digital entertainment era.
