South African Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie has demanded that the South African Football Association return approximately R13 million in state funding that had been provided to support implementation of Video Assistant Referee technology. McKenzie said the project has failed to move forward despite government backing and has now escalated the matter by writing to SAFA and indicating that he intends to raise the issue with FIFA.
Commercially, this is more than an officiating dispute. VAR requires investment in technology, training, production systems and match infrastructure, and the breakdown highlights the governance risks that can undermine sports-technology projects even when financing is available. For African leagues, the lesson is clear: modernization requires transparent procurement, accountable project management and a defined operational plan, not simply capital allocation.
