CHINESE HUMANOID ROBOT RUNS 9.39-SECOND 100M — FASTER THAN USAIN BOLT’S WORLD RECORD

A Chinese humanoid robot has crossed one of sport’s most extraordinary technological thresholds, completing 100 metres in 9.39 seconds during a preliminary heat at the World Humanoid Robot Games in Beijing—numerically faster than Usain Bolt’s 9.58-second human world record set in Berlin in 2009. Tiangong Ultra, developed by the Beijing Humanoid Robot Innovation Center, recovered from a slow start to overtake Honor’s Lightning near the finish, with Lightning clocking an equally remarkable 9.47 seconds. The performance represents a dramatic technological leap: Tiangong Ultra reportedly won the same event at last year’s inaugural Games in 21.50 seconds, meaning its 100m time has improved by more than 12 seconds in roughly a year. The comparison with Bolt is symbolic rather than an official athletics record—robot performances do not compete within World Athletics’ human record system—but the numbers provide a striking demonstration of how quickly humanoid mobility, balance, power and artificial intelligence are advancing.

The bigger story may therefore extend far beyond a novelty race. China increasingly regards humanoid robotics as a strategic industry, and the Games provide a highly visible testing and demonstration platform encompassing 51 events ranging from sprinting and football to dancing and industrial tasks. Lightning had reportedly run an even faster 9.32 seconds in testing, while engineering modifications—including longer legs—illustrate how rapidly developers can redesign machines specifically for performance. For the sports industry, this creates fascinating possibilities around robotics competitions, technology sponsorship, broadcast entertainment and entirely new intellectual properties at the intersection of AI, engineering and sport. We may not be witnessing the end of human athletic records; rather, we could be witnessing the birth of a completely new category of competitive sport—one in which engineers, algorithms and machines become the athletes.
