CAF President Dr Patrice Motsepe has congratulated Cameroon’s Indomitable Lionesses, FECAFOOT President Samuel Eto’o and the people of Cameroon following the country’s historic triumph at the TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2026. Cameroon defeated Malawi’s Scorchers 3–0 in the final at the Moulay El Hassan Stadium in Rabat, capturing their first WAFCON championship and completing a landmark tournament for the growth of African women’s football. Motsepe praised the leadership behind Cameroon’s success and expressed confidence that the Lionesses can carry that momentum onto the global stage at the FIFA Women’s World Cup Brazil 2027, while also commending runners-up Malawi for an outstanding campaign that secured their own place at the World Cup.
The championship also delivered a major financial milestone for women’s football in Africa, with Cameroon collecting US$2 million in winners’ prize money, compared with just US$200,000 for the WAFCON champions in 2018—an increase of more than 900 percent under Motsepe’s CAF leadership. Beyond Cameroon’s historic first title, that dramatic growth in prize money illustrates the increasing commercial value CAF is seeking to build around the women’s game. With Cameroon and Malawi now heading toward Brazil 2027 after memorable WAFCON campaigns, Morocco 2026 leaves behind a powerful statement about the competitive, financial and global trajectory of African women’s football.
