Liverpool FC has secured one of the most significant minority investments in European football, with Fenway Sports Group confirming a definitive agreement to sell a stake in the club to 1892 Holdings, a consortium led by Amit Bhatia. The investor group includes the Mittal Family Trusts, EE Capital—the family office of Elaine and Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin—and K5 Sports, whose fund counts Amazon founder Jeff Bezos as its lead investor. FSG will retain majority ownership and operational control, while Reuters reports the transaction involves roughly one-third of Liverpool and values the club at more than £5 billion, with the investment worth over £1.5 billion.

The deal illustrates how global football's biggest clubs are increasingly being treated as scarce media, entertainment and technology assets capable of attracting the same pools of billionaire and institutional capital traditionally associated with major U.S. franchises. For African sports business, the lesson is especially relevant because clubs such as Liverpool command enormous audiences across Africa: the next phase of value creation will increasingly involve converting international fandom into digital subscriptions, merchandise, sponsorship, experiences and first-party fan relationships rather than relying principally on domestic match-day economics.
