The Youth School Games were first organized by the Brazilian Olympic Committee (COB) in 2005  and, today, they represent the largest laboratory of Olympic athletes in the country, where every year new talents for Brazilian sport are revealed. The competitions count on support from the Ministry of Sport and Grupo Globo.

- Besides discovering athletes for elite sport, one of the objectives of the event is to contribute to the social insertion of youths through sport.

- As a national competition, during the municipal and state qualifying phases, the Youth School Games brings together 2 million athletes from public and private schools throughout the country, representing 40,000 schools in 3,950 cities of Brazil.

- During the national phases, organized by COB, about 4 thousand athletes coming from the 26 states of the Federation and the Federal District enter the competitions of each age group (12 to 14  and 15 to 17 years of age).

- In 2015, the program of the Fortaleza phase of the competition for athletes from 12 to 14 years includes 13 sport disciplines: athletics, badminton, cycling, rhythmic gymnastics, judo, wrestling, swimming, table tennis, chess, basketball, handball and volleyball.

- In November, the city of Londrina, in Paraná, will host the competitions for athletes from 15 to 17 years of age. In the program designed for this age group badminton will be replaced by beach volleyball.

- The competition has already revealed elite sport athletes as for example judo athletes Sarah Menezes and world champion Mayra Aguiar. The Brazilian delegation to the Olympic Games London 2012 had as much as 17 athletes in  Time Brasil who had already taken part in the School Games. At the Pan American Games Toronto 2015, 75 athletes in the Brazilian delegation had previously competed in the Youth School Games.

- At the Pan American Games Toronto 2015 among the 304 athletes in Time Brasil, whose disciplines are included in the program of both the Pan American and the Youth School Games, 75 had previously entered the school competitions.

- Besides the competitions, in parallel, the young athletes are offered a broad range of events. The social-educational program comprises several additional activities whose purpose is to bring youths from all parts of the country closer to the Olympic Values and to the positive example of sport practice.  This year the general theme of the event is "Gender Equality". Several subjects of interest to the UN Women organization are presented at the Hospitality Center.

- At every edition of the Games, Olympic or Pan American athletes or former Olympic or Pan American athletes are selected by to act as Games Ambassadors. The ambassadors are assigned the mission of taking the positive example of sport practice to the young participants, through direct contact with them, presentations and educational activities.
