South Africa’s Under 23 Invitational team put up a strong fight that was in vain against the Australian Centre of Excellence on Saturday that saw the visitors walking away with the Spar International Netball Series.
The Australians pulled off a narrow 41-37 victory to complete a 3-0 whitewash victory in Potchefstroom. Entering the match in avoidance of an embarrassing home whitewash, the South Africans looked rejuvenated in the early exchanges taking a 5-1 lead.
The Aussies closed the gap and put intense pressure on the hosts throughout the first three quarters. The hosts still refused to surrender the lead and went to the break leading 22-20. That is all that they needed in order to keep confidence up their sleeves.

But Australia were in a no nonsense mood and ensured that they used their pace at the start of the second period to claim a four point lead. With the South African defence working hard to put pressure on the Australians, and capitalising on the counter attacking, they were able to narrow the advantage to one point in the closing stages.
The tourists launched a final assault in the last few minutes as they sought to put the game to bed. They were fortunate to use their skills and pace that saw them pull off a 41-37 victory in the end.
