Rwanda’s Police saw their continental ambitions go up in flames after a 1-0 loss to visiting Vita Club Mokanda of Congo on Saturday in Kigali.
The result ensured the Congolese advanced 1-0 on aggregate after the Rwandese failed to make the most of a barren result in the first leg in Pointe-Noire last week.
Police hopes were ruined when Mathias Osagatsama scored the lone goal in the 80th minute to send the Congolese side into the 1/8th round.
Both sides created goal scoring chances but Police was more wasteful with Dany Usengimana and Songa Isaie failing to put the host up in the opening minutes.
Vita Club Mokanda had two goals ruled offside as they relied on counterattacks. With the game heading for penalties, a blunder by the host backline profited Mokanda’s Osagatsama who struck a sharp shot inside the goal area which beat goalie Marcel Nzaroroa.
“We used our chance which was a mistake by Police. I’m happy to win the game and qualify for the next round. They (Police) played well. We knew it was going to be tough, but we were ready to make good use of our chance”, said Mokanda coach, Alain Kayi.
“I’m disappointed with the result because we had the chance to win the game, but we failed to utilize our chances. We have to improve on our goal scoring because we missed a lot of chances”, noted Police coach, Andre Casa Mbungo.
The Congolese will face Angolan side Sagrada Esperança, who edged Liga Desportiva de Maputo of Mozambique 1-0 on aggregate.
