Rio de Janeiro, 8 January 2015 – The Rio 2016 Organising Committee has announced that a new Olympic facility will be set up in the Pontal region, West Zone of Rio de Janeiro, specifically for hosting the cycling time trials. Arrangements for road cycling races have also been adapted. The races will now start and finish at Fort Copacobana, and not at the Aterro do Flamengo as previously planned.

The new facilities in Pontal will be provided specifically for the men’s and women’s cycling time trials over a 29.8km route through the countryside of Grumari in the West Zone, an area including beaches and forest. The route includes a 1.2km hill climb and the time trials will start and finish at the Praça Tim Maia, at Pedra do Pontal. The men´s event will complete two laps (totalling 54.5 km), and the women one lap. The facilities will be a temporary arrangement, to be removed after the Games.

After a careful study of the region, road race routes over distances of 256.4 km (men) and 130.3 km (women) have been mapped out, passing through some of Rio’s postcard tourist spots, such as Copacabana, Ipanema, São Conrado, Barra da Tijuca, Grumari and Vista Chinesa. The men’s race will take place on 6 August and the women’s on 7 August, with steep hill climbs and long straights taking in Copacabana, Ipanema, Vista Chinesa, Barra da Tijuca and one (women) or four (men) laps of the Grumari Circuit.

The final stretch of the race includes two hill climbs through forest areas and a 2-km stretch over stone block roads on the Canoas/Vista Chinesa Circuit (one lap for women and three for men) in the Tijuca forest, the largest urban wooded area in the world.
