With heavy rain at The County Ground overnight, and continuing throughout the morning and early afternoon, umpires Paul Wilson and Langton Rusere called the game off at 14h13 local time without a ball being bowled.
Both sides had won their opening games of the ICC WWC – New Zealand beating Sri Lanka and South Africa seeing off Pakistan – but were forced to settle for one point each.
The result opens up the competition somewhat, as top of the table is the White Ferns, ahead of the second-placed Proteas on run-rate.
And New Zealand all-rounder Amy Satterthwaite is content with the position her side is in after two games, despite the disappointment of Wednesday’s washout.
“Before the tournament, we would have taken three points at this stage,” she explained. “To have no losses at this point – we’re pretty pleased with where we’re at.
“It’s not a setback in terms of reaching the knockouts but both teams will be really disappointed not to get out on the field and have a chance to get two points.
“No matter who you are playing, you’re always looking to get two points and there’s a sense of disappointment when you don’t play.
“But you have to expect weather like this in the UK, deal with it and move on because it’s something we can’t control.
“Now we’re looking forward to the next game and that’s the nature of these tournaments, you have to keep looking at one game at a time.”
New Zealand now prepares to play old rival Australia in Bristol on Sunday, while South Africa takes on the West Indies in Leicester on the same day.

“We’ve beaten them before, at home, so we’ve showed that we can compete against these teams.
“We wouldn’t like to settle for just one point, we would have liked to compete for two, but it’s still better than nothing.
“The weather is something you can’t control, so you have to make the best of it. We’ve got two or three days before our next game against the West Indies on Sunday, so we can go and work on some specifics.”
