Rugby is a great deal in Kenya and the East African nation is planning to build a purpose built rugby stadium putting them in good stead for a future bid to the annual hosting of a round of the IRB HSBC Sevens World Series.
Kenya has done well in Sevens Rugby and rugby is now one of the most popular sports. The 15’s team also narrowly missed out on a plane to England for the 2015 IRB World Cup.
The project is an initiative of the country’s president Uhuru Kenyatta, who has put cabinet secretary in the ministry of information, communication and technology, Fred Matiang’I, assisted by cabinet secretary in the ministry of sports, art and culture, Hassan Wario in charge of its visualization.
The IRB are due to announce the countries to host the World Series in a new schedule starting in 2015/ 16. Sources indicate Kenya will not be among them and the choice had already gone to Singapore, Voncouver (Canada) and Paris (France), who replace incumbents Tokyo (Japan), Las Vegas (USA) and Glasgow (Scotland).

The Kenyan Rugby Union chairman, Mwangi Muthee, had already issued a statement regarding the expected outcome.
“Competition for the hosting right is very tight. Everybody wants the sevens, there are so many capable hosts, and if one misses out, he has just to take it on the chin,” said Muthee.
