Nelson Mandela Bay in Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape has been shortlisted to host the 2018 Ironman 70.3 kilometre World Championship.
The event attracts around 4,000 athletes from around the world and represents a huge tourism opportunity for the city.
Nelson Mandela Bay is up against Nice in France and Budapest in Hungary, with the winning city announced in June 2016.

Michael Flanagan, media spokesperson for Ironman South Africa, said: “It is a huge opportunity for Nelson Mandela Bay and South Africa. As it is an international world championship event, we are looking at bringing in 4000 athletes for this race. It is split over two days-so we are looking at more than 16,000 people coming from overseas into the city. That would be a great tourism boost for South Africa and for the city. The eyes of the world will be on Nelson Mandela Bay.”
